NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- U.S. stocks finished Thursday's session lower, as investors treaded cautiously at the outset of earnings season and a day ahead of a key September jobs report that might determine whether more monetary stimulus from the Federal Reserve is on the way. The Dow Jones Industrial Average(DJIA 10,949, -19.00, -0.17%) fell 19.07 points, or 0.2%, to end at 10,948.58. Shares of Alcoa(AA 12.52, +0.32, +2.62%) fronted blue-chip losses, falling 1.4% ahead of the aluminum giant's earnings after the close. The S&P 500 index (SPX1,158, -1.91, -0.17%) fell 1.91 points, or 0.2%, to 1,158.06, weighed down by telecoms and materials. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite(COMP 2,384, +3.01, +0.13%), however, finished slightly higher, gaining 3.01 points, or 0.1%, to 2,383.67.
