Drivers Beware- Changes are Coming!
On October 1, 2013, two new traffic safety laws will be put into full force in the attempt to make our roadways safer.
The first law allows police to pull over anyone who is using a handheld device, making this a primary offense instead of a secondary one. Up until now, police were only able to pull drivers over if they were committing another traffic violation first. The fine for using a handheld device while driving has been increased from $40 to $75 dollars and will continue to increase with each offense.
The second law being put into effect is known as the rear seat belt law. This will require all passengers over 16 years old to wear a seat belt when in the back seat of a vehicle. It will be considered a secondary offense, meaning an officer must pull the driver over for another traffic violation before a ticket can be issued. This law carries a $50 fine and no points.
