How to Handle Skidding and Hydroplaning

The past two days have been nothing but cold and rainy, without a chance for sunshine for at least two more days. With the large amount of rain we have gotten thus far and much more to come; it is crucial to take extra caution when driving. Now that Fall is among us, there are many leaves on the road, making your daily commute even more hazardous on the wet and slick roadways.

Weather.com has provided 5 valuable tips for driving in the rain to help prevent skidding and hydroplaning that we felt would be great to pass along to our readers.

Hydroplaning occurs when the water in front of your tires builds up faster than your cars weight can push it out of the way. Your vehicle is then lifted up on top of the water, causing it to slide on the thin layer of water between the road and your tires. Speaking from personal experience, this is an extremely scary thing that you have little control of once it occurs. However, keeping the following 5 tips in mind will help you avoid or handle this terrifying occurrence:

1.)   Drive slow and carefully, especially on curvy roads. Make sure your steering and braking is light by maintaining a gentle pressure on the steering wheel and brake pedal.

2.)   If you do get stuck skidding on the road, stay calm, take your foot off the gas, and carefully steer in the direction you want to go.

3.)   Correct tire inflation can help prevent you from hydroplaning, as can the proper amount of tread on your tires. If possible, drive in the tracks of the car in front of you.

4.)   If your vehicle begins to hydroplane, do not brake or turn suddenly (this could cause your car to skid). Simply take your foot off the gas until you can feel your vehicle slowing down and regaining contact with the road. If you car has anti-lock brakes, you can brake normally and the car's computer will pump the brakes much more effectively than a person can.

5.)   Driving defensively on wet roadways can help you prevent skidding and hydroplaning all together. Be sure to drive at an appropriate speed and be on the lookout for running and standing water.
