Have a Child Heading off to College?

Important Information Regarding Your Current Auto-Policy

Going away to college is an extremely exciting time for students and their parents. Before your student packs up and heads off to school, make sure they have the auto coverage they need!

While your son/daughter may not be driving while they are away at school, they most likely will continue to drive when they are home on breaks. Therefore, they should remain listed on your current auto policy. If your student decides to take a vehicle to college with them, your auto policy should cover them as long as the vehicle is registered in your name. If your student drives a friend's car while they are at school, they typically will be covered, as long as their friend is listed on their parents' policy. This type of coverage is likely to be secondary, with the friend's parents' being the primary coverage.

Now, let's talk discounts! If your student is attending a college that is more than 100 miles from home and they leave their vehicle behind, they may be qualified for a distant-student discount. Also, students may be eligible for a good-student discount. In order to obtain a good-student discount, students generally need to be a full-time student at an accredited college and must meet certain academic qualifications. Finally, if your student is under 21 years old and completes a driver education course, they may also be eligible for a policy discount.

Your student's future is important to us, make sure you have the proper auto coverage to protect them as they begin this new chapter in their lives.
